Copenhagen, Denmark, January 11 2008 - ENKAM Pharmaceuticals A/S, the privately held biopharmaceutical development company focused on cancer and central nervous system disorders, is pleased to note new study data which shows that administration of FGL, a neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) mimicking peptide, can prevent cognitive deficit seen after chronic stress. The data has been accepted for publication in Behavioural Pharmacology.
This finding adds to the commercial potential of ENKAM's promising new approach for the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease. FGL works by protecting neuronal cells. Its activity re-establishes the cognitive function of cells by promoting the connectivity between cells and promoting the formation of new neurons (nerve stem cells). The study also indicates that FGL could have broader therapeutic applications including its use as an anti-depressant.
Study leader, César Venero, PhD, Associate Professor from Facultad de Psicología, UNED, Spain, said: "The study demonstrates that chronic stress in a preclinical model can induce cognitive deficits and that treatment with FGL can prevent the long time side effects. These data may have applications for stress induced via a variety of situations including, for example, that caused via military service and periodic stressful situations."
FGL is ENKAM's lead compound for the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease. Formulation and clinical manufacture of FGL has been successfully completed at ENKAM allowing both subcutaneous and intranasal administration. A phase I study is planned to commence in 2008.
ENKAM also announces today that an investor syndicate, including a local lead supporter of ENKAM, is raising funds to support the imminent partnering of FGL for Alzheimer's Disease. In addition, the funding will allow ENKAM to advance its cancer compound to Phase II and establish three other CNS projects through partnership within the next two years.
Commenting on this announcement, Morten Albrechtsen MD, Chief Executive and a founder of ENKAM Pharmaceuticals, said: "We are delighted to see this strong data which suggests that FGL has multiple therapeutic applications - in addition to Alzheimer's Disease. We are pleased to learn of the high level of interest in FGL and have the option to close a partnering deal in the field of Alzheimer's Disease shortly."
