Postive Preclinical Data in Traumatic Brain Injury

Copenhagen, Denmark May 30th, 2006 - ENKAM Pharmaceuticals A/S, the Copenhagen-based biotechnology company focused on cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, is pleased to announce that preclinical studies have shown that the P2 peptide effectively facilitates recovery of cognitive and motor functions after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Currently there is no approved treatment aimed at prevention or rescue of neurological tissue damage following TBI. The results from these studies are being presented today at the 16th Meeting of the European Neurological Society in Lausanne, Switzerland.

P2 is a synthetic neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) mimetic peptide. In this study post injury systemic delivery of P2 following TBI was shown to significantly improve both cognitive and motor deficit resulting from injury by protecting, enhancing and repairing cells.

According to the *European Journal of Neurology1,600,000 experience a head injured every year in Europe (population 683 million). 4% of patients die and 80% of patients do not initially recognise the severity of their symptoms. The main causes of TBI are road traffic accidents, falls, acts of violence and sports injuries. Patients with TBI display chronic deficits in behaviour, mood, social function and cognition. The majority of patients that survive TBI experience long-term problems.

Commenting on this announcement, Morten Albrechtsen MD, Chief Executive and a founder of ENKAM Pharmaceuticals, said:“There is a major unmet medical need associated with traumatic brain injury and a significant worldwide market. We are delighted by this new data on P2 and the interest that has been expressed in this program.”
