Copenhagen, Denmark, October 8 2007 - ENKAM Pharmaceuticals A/S, the privately held biopharmaceutical development company focused on cancer and Central Nervous System (CNS) disorders, is pleased to give an R&D pipeline update and announces that an important data finding has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Neurochemistry.
ENKAM’s R&D pipeline has advanced and the understanding of the role of Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptors (FGFR) both for cancer and CNS disorders has progressed. FGFR is the target of ENKAM’s lead compounds which include FGL, for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, and Dekafin2, for the treatment of cancer.
Publication in the Journal of Neurochemistry
ENKAM’s data has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Neurochemistry. The title of the paper will be “Functional agonists of the fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR)” by Li S et al. The publication has been published electronically.
FGL Lead in CNS Disorders
Cognition and neuroregeneration are the focus of ENKAM’s CNS programmes with FGL as the lead compound for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. ENKAM has several other compounds in development with great potential for targeting different neurotrophic factors and their receptors.
The formulation and clinical manufacture of FGL has been completed successfully allowing both subcutaneous and intranasal administration. The next clinical study (phase I/II) studies will commence in 2008.
Dekafin2 Lead in Cancer Portfolio
ENKAM has a rich portfolio of compounds to treat a range of cancers including prostate, breast, colon and bladder cancer. The mechanisms of action of these peptides involve direct induction of apoptosis (cell death), terminal differentiation and/or cell cycle arrest in the tumour cells.
Dekafin2 is ENKAM’s lead compound for the treatment of cancer and has demonstrated positive in vitro effects in a range of cancers and has also demonstrated positive results in vivo in xenograph models using the MCF-7 cell line (including taxoter insensitive MCF-7 cells). This has been advanced into the development phase and the first clinical study will commence next year.
Pipe-line Focus
ENKAM has reviewed its unique and deep pipeline. The result has been to focus on the development of FGL and Dekafin2.
In order to exploit the full value of the assets owned by ENKAM, several partnerships are being established focused on selected targets and indications.
Commenting on this announcement, Morten Albrechtsen MD, Chief Executive and a founder of ENKAM Pharmaceuticals, said: “We are delighted to have progressed the R&D pipeline on FGL and Defakin2 primarily for Alzheimer’s disease and for a range of cancer types, respectively. We expect to be able to announce further positive updates on ENKAM’s R&D pipeline in the near future and this position ENKAM well for both partnering and further investment opportunities.”
ENKAM will attend and present at the 15th BioPartnering Europe Conference on October 7-9, 2007 at the QEII Conference Centre, London, UK.
